In Suave We Trust Presents…. “The Top 50 Albums of 2018”

I’m back like I never left! Well actually I haven’t done a Top 50 list since 2016…. 2017 was a very tough year with posting and 2018 was no better, by my standards at least. But best believe we’re getting things poppin‘ in 2019 and we are closing out 2018 with a bang. I present to you my Top 50 Albums for the year.

So the albums selected released between January 1st thru December 15th. I do not really follow the window that Grammy Committee does so please keep in mind the date range I mentioned. So yes next year I’ll be going from the December 15th of 2018 thru December 15th of 2019…. Also there is the possibility I may go from January 1st 2019 to December 31st 2019 since I like to post these rankings a few weeks into the new year anyway!

First I would like to shout out New Branches for letting me use this image! Go Give them a follow!

But as you can see there were plenty of amazing projects that dropped this year! I would like to take the time to applaud all these artist for their work BUT I CAN ONLY GO WITH 50! This year I found myself struggling at times to make these picks and It was difficult to do. Some popular projects may not be ranked where some would like or they may not have even made the 50. TOP 5!!!!!

5. Cardi B – Invasion of Privacy

Cardi B had herself hell of a year! I found it difficult putting her ahead of so many good albums but I had to be honest with myself and to you all. (Yes I am specifically referring to putting her ahead of Jay Rock’s ‘Redemption’) Cardi B makes a strong case as the Music Industry’s MVP in 2018. “Bodak Yellow” took all the way off. She had two #1 singles in “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like That.” She was the 5th female rapper in history with a #1 album. On top of that half her album was on Billboard Top 200 at one point and she had amazing features. Cardi B is a star and you can make a strong case for ‘Invasion of Privacy’ being #1 on my list but its my list, so NAH! Anyways, Congratulations Cardi on your success and thank you for delivering an amazing album. She is already off to a great start in 2019! Expecting big things!

4. Nipsey Hussle – Victory Lap

“Last Time That I Checc’d,” this was arguably Nipsey’s best project! Maybe? Probably not. Let me chill because the hardcore Nipsey fans probably want to kill me for not having “Victory Lap” at #1! For me this was a phenomenal album but not THE BEST OF 2018. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST, hence it being at #4 out of 50. This project had amazing production to go with flawless lyricism. Nipsey has been slept on for so long but I’m glad that “Victory Lap” allowed the casual hip hop/rap fans to get really really familiar with what elite talent looks like!

mac miller

3. Mac Miller – Swimming

Damn… the untimely passing of Mac Miller will forever hurt. He was such a good guy and was truly loved by everyone. ‘Swimming’ was my favorite album this year for many reasons but I would like to make one thing clear. I am a Mac Miller stan but i didn’t let that cloud my judgement here. Also, this wasn’t a sympathy pick. I truly believe Mac had a Top 5 album this year. I’m prepared to debate anyone. This album was flawless and displayed Mac really mastering his craft with production and just overall song making. This was a real emotional body of work as he was battling a lot. It did seem like he was overcoming these obstacles but unfortunately we lost a young talent who really was underrated as a producer and an artist. I’m getting emotional talking about this so I’ll stop here. R.I.P Mac and thank you for everything!

2. Pusha-T – DAYTONA

Outside of ‘Swimming’, ‘Daytona’ was the project I played on repeat daily since its arrival this past summer. This album could easily be #1 as well. Though it is only seven tracks, there was a lot of things occurring in all seven tracks. Production was flawless. I know you all hate the producer but I’m not gonna let his political views seal off my ears. All  seven tracks were so well produced. And the sampling?! Forget about it. It was dope. As expected too, Pusha-T delivered! Push is an artist who understands what his winning formula is and never creates without it!

For more insight on what makes ‘Daytona’ a Top 2 project this year, check out the album review.

astro boi

1. Travis Scott – ASTROWORLD

ASTROWORLD WAS THE BEST ALBUM OF 2018 WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!!!! I initially wrote a crazy long argument but deleted it because I think I covered everything in my album review for ‘Astroworld’ explaining why its the  best album this year. Production may be its biggest strength here over lyricism but no one is checking for Travis to be all miracle lyrical on tracks. Its his ability to make songs that make him an elite artist. On top of that numbers don’t lie… You see how much he sold and how long he had held on to the #1 album spot! He may be the favorite to win “Best Rap Album” and “Album Of The Year” at the Grammy’s if #6 thru #2 on this list don’t win. Out of all the albums on this list outside of ‘Daytona’ and ‘Swimming’, ‘Astroworld’ has the most replay value. So yes ‘Astroworld’ was the #1 album of 2018! If you disagree, hit me up we’ll talk about it.

Thank You For Reading! Please, Please, Please Provide Me With Your Thoughts and Criticism! It’s All Love. Also Please Share This List With Your Friends & Family. Hopefully I Did A Good Job With Rankings Or At LEAST I Have A Better List Than Other Publications.

YG – Stay Dangerous (Album Review)

Last week, YG’s highly anticipated third studio album, ‘Stay Dangerous,’ was released! After week one the numbers are in…. ‘Stay Dangerous’ did 55.5K first week! Is this good? I’m not sure but he met his projected amount! I am very surprised the projection numbers weren’t larger. ‘Stay Dangerous,’ the follow up 2016’s ‘Still Brazy,’ is equipped with 15 tracks with guest appearances from Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, A$AP Rocky, Jay 305, Quavo, Ty Dolla $ign, Mozzy & NBA Youngboy. DJ Mustard returns to handle production along with TM88, MP 808, and J Holt, just to name a few. I AM SO EXCITED TO GET A CHANCE TO REVIEW THIS PROJECT! I LOVE YG! Lets Get It!!!

  13. DEEPER THAN RAP (4/5)
  15. BOMPTOWN FINEST (4.5/5)

I’ll be honest. Before doing this review I read a few other reviews just because I’ve always been interested  in hearing others opinions on new music before I started blogging. I was really curious to hear what people thought of this project. What I kept seeing  was absolute BS on every site and it had me furious. So here I am to give you a little  more of an accurate review of ‘Stay Dangerous’. YG gave us sounds from both ‘My Krazy Life’ and ‘Still Brazy’ all whiles showcasing his versatility. So with two excellent studio albums under his belt you could expect a possible step back. YG gave us both versions of himself.  On ‘Stay Dangerous’ we get YG the story teller from “My Krazy Life” and YG the hit maker that can’t miss. Also, after a couple listens I viewed this album as having three parts to it.

Off the rip, YG gets things started with the heavy hitting “10 Times.” Introductions are always important and this track gets things started off the right way.  Immediately after hearing this song and knowing the singles released, I had an idea where YG was going with this album. The next track “Bulletproof” seems to be an ode to his studio shootout he was involved in a few years back. This track features a very fitting verse from Jay 305. The transition from “Bulletproof” to the A$AP Rocky featured track “Handgun” is beyond FLAWLESS. I can’t fake y’all. This collab was way out of left field for me! Oddly enough, this combination worked out quite nicely and I know its a song a lot of people enjoy. On “Suu Whoop” and “Cant Get In Kanada” YG gets real and talks gang banging briefly and reps his set. To close out this first third of the album, DJ Mustard flips Right Said Fred’s “Too Sexy”  to create “Too Cocky.” This was one of my favorite songs on the album.  This first section was what I really love YG for. He  gives us those hard hitting bangers that just have you thinking YG is your spirit animal upon his delivery on every track.

So these next few tracks served a purpose in my opinion. The middle section definitely was filled with tracks that were seen as the most marketable. “Power” and “Slay” were attempts from YG to get him a chart topper all whiles creating a hit geared for the ladies. I personally thought “Power” was a great track! Ty and YG go way back and they still have this special chemistry on tracks every time they link up. As for “Slay” ? Trash. One of the lead singles was that hit track YG was looking for. “Big Bank” which featured Hip Hop’s “Best Feature Killers” in Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Nicki Minaj was a smash hit and that’s what really generated the hype for this release. A surprise highlight to close out section two of ‘ Stay Dangerous’  is “Too Brazzy” that is topped off by one of the best features this year from Sacramento’s very own Mozzy.

As we arrive to the final third of ‘Stay Dangerous’, we arrive to tracks that carry some  of  the most personal bars we’ve ever gotten from YG. YG does give his listeners an inside look into his life but not like this! On “Deeper Than Rap” YG all of a sudden becomes vulnerable as he raps about fatherhood and about his daughter not being able to see him all the time. This moment is big because you see YG’s progression as not just an artist being able to dig deep and get personal but you see his growth as a man and father. This rapper life is crazy and its great to always hear rap fathers put emphasis on their number one priority being their child or children. With “Bompton’s Finest” to close out this album, YG ends things of with reflection as he talks about making it from nothing to real life problems between him and his family, most notably DJ Mustard.

‘Stay Dangerous’ should not be compared to ‘Still Brazy’ or ‘My Krazy Life’.  But since its what the masses want to do fine lets do it. ‘Stay Dangerous’  might be a step down from his first two projects but it for damn sure IS NOT a step back for YG.  It’s clear that ‘Stay Dangerous’ has some spots brighter than others, but in my HONEST OPINION  YG delivers one of the hardest hitting albums of 2018.

Rating: 8.5/10

Tyler and A$AP are quite the duo! Today’s #SongOfTheDay is the two’s latest joint effort, a track called “Potato Salad”. On top of this release, these  two gifted artists teased a collaborative project dubbed ‘WANGSAP’  at the end of the visual. This is long over due. Tyler, the Creator and ASAP Rocky have a solid collaborative history. They teamed up on “Telephone Calls” off ASAP Mob’s 2016 mixtape Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends, while Rocky returned the favor on “Who Dat Boy” from last year’s Flower Boy. All very dope songs! I hate to be demanding but I need ‘WANGSAP’ by this winter!! Enjoy

A$AP Ferg “Still Striving” Album Review

A$AP Ferg is clearly a star. He has the swagger and charisma though to be a SUPERSTAR. Ferg gave us “Always Strive And Prosper” a year and a half ago and it was a project i definitely enjoyed but,  the reviews were up and down stating it was a set back from his debut “Trap Lord.” Still Striving is considered a commercial mixtape. All the songs are original music, plenty of big features, and posted across all the major streaming services, yet mixtape is the classification  many media outlets are going with. My biggest question that i had before listening to this was, Is “Still Striving,” with its big high-profile guest list, the project where Ferg takes that big step forward into becoming a superstar?! Lets dive in!

5. Trap And A Dream

Trap And A Dream was a perfect way to start this project off… Ferg teams up with Meek on here and they show the f*ck out man. Ferg’s flow is as good as anyone in the game today. He brought the aggressive bars on here and they hit hard! This may be the second time Meek has teamed up with Ferg and honestly, they sound perfect together! I think it has to do with both artist’s energy. It’s simply unmatched. The beat also was made for Meek as he talks his sh*t as usual. His as an intro track set the tone for me and it had myself super hyped to hear the rest of the album.

4. Rubber Band Man

Dipset x A$AP …… HARLEM’S FINEST TEAMED UP! So I’ll say this first, the beat is the strongest component of this track but that doesn’t mean Ferg and Killa did not do their thing. Ferg out shined Cam on here which is expected because it is his song. Cam did his thing his verse was a little lazy but it was still dope. He could have definitely came harder than he did but hey this track is iconic and means a lot to myself and Harlem World!

3. Olympian

Okay so Ferg took us to Harlem on “Rubber Band Man” featuring Killa Cam and we stay in Harlem with this Dave East feature! The bounce and tempo on here is something serious. Ferg has a great ear for beats, if you all didn’t know this already! Dave East goes crazy and puts the beat in a body bag and Ferg just straight unzips the bag and just unleashes on it again. The hook is is a slight kitchen fire but that plus these two spitting fire on here… yeah you get the picture. Oh and that Serena bar GEEKS!

2. Plain Jane

So i heard this song a few months back and its honestly still one of my favorite songs this year since being released! Ferg basically mimics “Slob on My Knob” with the chorus. But with his verses, he lights yet another fire. Ferg’s flow man….it’s really something else. The production on this track was A1 and one of my favorite sounds on the album. Nice hearing a song by Ferg with no features too.

1. Mattress (Remix)

Mattress…Mattress…Mattress…Mattress…Mattress…Mattress. Okay let me stop. This song embodies A$AP Mob’s classic sound. One of the reason’s this is my favorite track on here. The Ferg x Rocky back and forth on here brought back memories of  that dope freestyle they had years ago where they were going off the top and exchanging dope bars with humorous punchlines. They are quite the duo man. Like can we get a joint project? Sheesh.  They made the back and forth on here sound pretty competitive which was only right with this heavy ass beat! Famous Dex, Rich The Kid and Carti both did their thing on here. I know Carti runs with the mob and all but is Dex an affiliate too?? Love This Song!

1. Trap and a Dream feat. Meek Mill (4.6/5)

2. Rubber Band Man feat. Cam’ron (4.6/5)

3. Olympian feat. Dave East (4.75/5)

4. Aww Yeah feat. Lil Yachty (4/5)

5. What Do You Do feat. NAV(4/5)

6. Coach Cartier feat. Famous Dex (4/5)

7. Mad Man feat. Playboi Carti (4/5)

8. Plain Jane (5/5)

9. Nasty (Who Dat) feat. Migos (4.3/5)

10. Mattress (Remix) feat. Famous Dex, Rich The Kid, Playboi Carti, & A$AP Rocky (5/5)

11. One Night Savage feat. MadeinTYO (4/5)

12. East Coast (Remix) feat. Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, French Montana, Dave East, A$AP Rocky, & Busta Rhymes (4.4)

13. Nandos (4.3/5

14. Tango feat. Kanobby (3.7/5)

I won’t beat around the bush here. I’ll make this short and sweet. Ferg is a good f*cking rapper who has a GREAT ear for beats. The man really is talented and I think we should realize this by now. I had a SLIGHT issue with this project though. This was another project by him that’s feature heavy and not enough Ferg. On top of this being feature heavy, sometimes you forget, on some tracks, that this is a Ferg song/project and think it belongs to the featured artists. I think Ferg needs to showcase himself more so he can truly get the credit he deserves and be respected as a real rap stud. On some the features Ferg has that French Montana disease where it’s his song but he plays second fiddle. He’s too talented for that. But like I said, this is a slight issue to me. It just sounds like a big issue because I’m a huge Ferg fan. All the features are solid though and it shows that Ferg is respected among his peers and has some clout! As a fan I worry if these other people (rap critics and the “rap critics”) respect Ferg and see how talented he is. “Still Striving” is definitely a dub and it shows Ferg is headed in the right direction of Super stardom BUT for the next project I’m going to kind of need more of a Ferg showcase.
